Also, this has just reminded me of my university calculus lecturer, whose favourite metaphor for making an ansatz in a calculation was “look for the parrot”
Seriously. There was a story behind the parrot (involving a pirate costume I think) but I forget what exactly that was. He would just remind us multiple times each semester to “look for the parrot”, bouncing around the lecture theatre in his black gown like a bat. He was a true character, and a lovely man.
