I’ve considered writing about my parents because nobody would believe what I wrote - I tried it in stand up once and it was clear my mother was too much like a rejected Monty python character played by Terry Jones on crack… maybe one day I’ll figure out a way to speak about them as eloquently and affectionately as you do… made me smile a lot.

I really enjoyed this piece. I'm sure that I have had plenty of stupid arguments with my parents--too much apologizing from my mom, for example. I hate it when I'm apologizing and someone tries to butt in with their apologizing!--but the really silly ones have been with my husband. I come out looking pretty terrible.

1. At the end of a long road trip (Alabama to New Hampshire) with a tiny baby, we stopped at a Walmart and I gave my cart a tiny push in the parking lot and a man in a truck got mad at me for--in my view at the time--NO reason and my husband took the stupid stranger's side. I was SO MAD I was all set to drop him and his suitcases off at home and hit the road again with mine.

2. On a trip with him and a friend, we drove by a circus tent and I, feeling insecure but also just being silly, said, "I'm like the fat lady in a circus." And he would not deny it for anything under the sun. I was so mad that I spent the night at my friend's hotel instead of with him.

I'm sure there are more, but those two are classics.

Back to parents, there are stories in my fiction that relate to our family dynamics but they are, at the end of the day, fiction. Still, if something is really specific to us, I try to send it by them first and I'm often touched by their responses.
